Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 3/4 – 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup salted butter melted

Method

Cook the Sausage
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned. Break it into small crumbles. Drain excess grease and let it cool slightly.
Preheat and Prepare the Dish
  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Pour melted butter into an 8×8-inch baking dish. Tilt the dish so butter coats the bottom evenly.
Mix Dry Ingredients
  1. In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, and baking powder.
Add Wet Ingredients
  1. Pour in buttermilk and stir until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough will be thick.
Fold in Sausage and Cheese
  1. Add cooked sausage and shredded cheddar cheese. Mix gently until evenly distributed.
Spread the Dough
  1. Place the dough directly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Spread it evenly to the edges.
Score Before Baking
  1. Use a knife to cut the unbaked dough into 9 squares. This helps create even sausage cheese biscuits.
Bake
  1. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown on top. The edges will be crispy from the butter.
Cool Slightly and Serve
  1. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing fully.

Notes

1. Do not overmix the dough.
2. Score before baking for easy slicing.
3. Let biscuits rest before cutting.
4. Drain sausage well to avoid excess grease.
