Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Red or pink food coloring optional
  • 24 maraschino cherries drained and patted dry
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 –2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice

Method
 

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir butter and sugar until smooth and creamy.
  3. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until combined.
  4. Add flour and salt, then stir until a soft dough forms.
  5. Add a small drop of food coloring if using and mix gently.
  6. Scoop dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place on the baking sheet.
  7. Press a thumb lightly into the center of each cookie.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges look set.
  9. Let cookies cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a rack.
  10. Stir glaze ingredients until smooth, spoon over cooled cookies, and top each with a cherry.

Notes

  • Dry cherries fully before use
  • Cool cookies before glazing
  • Use parchment paper for easy cleanup
